“One of our clients had her assignment rejected a couple times, but finally, after your proofing, it was accepted! Good Job!”

About me
Hi! Thanks for stopping by. I’m James Paul Wallis (call me James), an editor and proofreader with over two decades’ experience in the publishing industry and a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP).
I work as a freelance editor and proofreader, offering services to individuals, publishers and other companies. I specialise in non-fiction, in particular science and maths, but work on a wide range of materials.
My career began at one of the UK’s most popular educational publishers, planning, writing, editing and designing maths, science and language books for schools. I later spent a decade in B2B magazines, including serving as editor of an international air rescue magazine (combining aviation and medicine).
For more detail on the services I offer, see below.
For more detail on my work history, check out my LinkedIn profile.
I’d love to hear from you to discuss how I can help with your projects.

freelance editor and proofreader
PS If you’d like to know what I do in my spare time, I enjoy playing with my kids, playing music, getting out in the fresh air, learning languages, and sometimes work on my passion project running the smallest of small non-fiction presses.
Services
I’m a native Brit, so my mother tongue is UK English, but I also work extensively in US English. I work for clients around the world, including non-native speakers of English (i.e. ESL/EFL writers).
In terms of style, I follow each client’s style preferences, or help them draft a style sheet if needed.
For proofreading text documents, I typically work in Word using track changes and comments. For checking other types of files, such as PDFs, presentation slides or videos, I work in the way that’s most convenient for you.
Examples of materials I work on:
- School books
- Website copy
- Marketing emails
- Academic journal articles
- Social media posts
- Contracts
- Corporate presentations and brochures
- Press releases
- Maths questions
- Science activity sheets
- Video subtitles
I work with clients to improve their documents in whatever way is needed. That can include:
- Developmental editing
- Stylistic/line editing
- Copyediting
- Proofreading
- Document formatting
Each project is different, and my work may involve a combination of more than one of the above. If you’re not sure what level of editing your text needs, just get in touch.
Other strings to my bow
Most of my time is spent editing and proofreading, but I also enjoy writing content and doing design work, including page layout, web design and basic video editing.
Rates/Payments
My rates are reasonable and open to negotiation.
According to clients’ preferences, I can work on a per word, hourly, or fixed fee.
For new clients, I can offer a free sample edit.
Working with international payment providers such as Wise and PayPal allows me to accept payments in a variety of currencies.
In most cases, I can invoice clients in their usual currency with banking details local to them.
CIEP
I am a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP). The CIEP, formerly the Society for Editors and Proofreaders (SfEP), promotes excellence in English language editing, and sets and demonstrates editorial standards. Professional members must demonstrate extensive experience and a high level of skill in copyediting/proofreading.
